Mobile Medical Unit to Introduce Prenatal Support Services to Areas of Vulnerability for a Lack of Prenatal Care
Many expectant mothers and parents in East Tennessee face barriers as they try to access medical, educational, and material resources. Choices Resource Center offers free medical and educational services in Oak Ridge, but transportation challenges prevent many parents from receiving the prenatal and parenting support they seek. Choices has partnered with local churches to provide prenatal and parenting class locations and storage; however, the staffing and maintenance of medical clinics at each site is impractical and costly.
To extend their services cost-effectively, Choices seeks to explore the purchase of a Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) to travel to rural and underserved areas across East Tennessee. The unit will offer pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing to ensure that these vital services are more accessible. In collaboration with partner churches and Save the Storks (STS), a 501(c)(3) organization with specialized expertise in providing MMUs for pregnancy centers.
The MMU will enable Choices to serve approximately 200-250 additional clients each year, provide approximately 50-75 more ultrasounds annually, and significantly increase access to essential healthcare for vulnerable populations in their region.
