Expanding Access to Youth Mental Health and Physical Activity Programs for Girls in East Tennessee
Girls face increasing challenges around physical activity and mental health. As girls age, participation in physical activities declines compared to that of boys, placing them at greater risk for obesity, anxiety, depression, and other long-term health concerns. Many girls also experience declining self-confidence and increased social pressures that can negatively impact their emotional well-being. Prevention-focused programs that promote physical activity while building social-emotional skills can play a critical role in strengthening protective factors for youth.
Girls on the Run of Greater Knoxville (GOTRGK) addresses these challenges through an evidence-based program that integrates movement with lessons that build confidence, strengthen peer relationships, and develop healthy coping strategies. Through a supportive environment led by trained volunteer coaches, participants gain tools that promote resilience, positive self-image, and lifelong healthy behaviors.
GOTRGK continues to focus on expanding access to prevention-based programming while strengthening the organizational infrastructure required to support that growth. Funding will support increased staff capacity, volunteer training, and the development of a dedicated space to support regional expansion.
