SoulBridge: Expanding Affordable, Trauma-Informed Mental Health Care in East Tennessee

SoulBridge’s mission is to increase access to healthcare in rural and underserved areas by creating a thriving network of healthcare resources where organizations, nonprofits, and providers collaborate. They seek to address a critical mental health need in Knox and surrounding counties, where a severe crisis is driven by generational trauma, poverty, and limited healthcare access. High rates of depression, anxiety, and substance use exist, and many residents have experienced multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), increasing the need for trauma-informed care. Barriers like distance, cost, and a shortage of providers limit access, particularly in rural communities

Phase I research will include multiple methods and clearly defined protocols. Surveys will be conducted with healthcare providers, partner sites, and community leaders to gather insights into needs, barriers, and opportunities for collaboration. In addition, existing research and literature – such as the United Way’s ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) database – will be reviewed to better understand economic trends and challenges faced by working households. Lastly, two in-person events will support deeper engagement and information gathering. The goal is to establish new partnerships, strengthen existing partnerships, provide valuable quantitative and qualitative insights, and define future program development and expansion.
