Food As Medicine

Mental health disorders and addiction are often linked to poor nutrition, which exacerbates symptoms like depression, anxiety, and mood instability. Many individuals struggling with behavioral health issues have diets high in processed foods and low in essential nutrients, leading to neurotransmitter imbalances and increased cravings. Substance use further depletes key vitamins and minerals, worsening mental health symptoms and increasing relapse risk. Addressing these deficiencies is crucial for improving emotional well-being and supporting long-term recovery.

A nutrition-focused approach can enhance mental health and addiction treatment outcomes. The SMILES trial (2017) found that individuals with depression who followed a Mediterranean diet experienced significant symptom improvement, highlighting the power of food as medicine. Similar strategies benefit those in recovery by stabilizing mood and promoting brain healing.

By integrating nutritional strategies into treatment plans, individuals can achieve better mental health outcomes, reduce relapse risk and reinforce long-term recovery—proving that food is indeed medicine.
