Healthcare for All - Through a Computer
RAM is a major nonprofit organization that delivers free, quality healthcare to uninsured, underinsured, or underserved people. This care is provided through pop-up clinics held in communities nationwide that offer free dental, medical, and vision services to those who otherwise cannot receive care. Operating on a first-come, first-served basis, RAM’s full-scale clinics almost always reach capacity quickly, and staff must turn individuals away once there is not enough space available to accept more patients. Capacity is determined at each clinic based on the venue capacity, volunteer numbers, and capabilities.
Unfortunately, RAM cannot hold a full-scale clinic in every community that needs it. This lack of services usually leaves individuals with nowhere to turn to for help. To help further bridge the gap between individuals and accessibility to care, a second telehealth mobile unit would drastically aid in helping RAM to bring free, accessible care to more of those in need. This unit would consist of a customized motor-coach-type vehicle outfitted with multiple examination/consultation rooms staffed by volunteer nurses and remote medical providers. In addition, by partnering with groups or individuals who have identified a need within their community, RAM could bring a telehealth unit to communities that have invited the organization to their area. This expansion of services will positively impact not only telehealth services but all of RAM’s operations.
