Planting a SEEED for Housing
SEEED plans to address our community’s housing challenges by constructing an apartment complex for low-income residents with section-8 vouchers. The problem they are addressing is a shortage of affordable housing. The solution is building affordable places for families to rent. The proposed apartments would provide up to six families with affordable housing. In Knoxville, rent has increased by approximately 34% since 2020 due to the increased population and the influx of pandemic cash. Apartments will be built at 0 Sanders Lane in distressed census tract 20, surrounded by five other distressed census tracts, as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), with a total average poverty rate of 33.58%. The expected measurable impact will be that up to six families have affordable housing, defined as no more than 30% of their income.
