Chronic homelessness has become a topic of conversation nationwide, and Knoxville is not immune. However, finding a solution to this growing problem is complicated and will take the cooperation of community and government leaders, businesses, and non-profits. Solutions must be practical but offer the homeless within our community dignity and compassion.
It is hard for most of us to imagine carrying around all of our possessions on a daily basis. Yet, for many homeless, not having a safe place to store their precious belongings is a barrier to seeking services. Knox Area Rescue Ministries has proposed a project to provide safe and secure lockers for these items to be stored. Those using the lockers would “pay” the rent for their usage by working with a case manager and checking in daily for work, volunteer, or class assignments. A proposal like this may seem small compared to the scale of the problem, but small steps can lead to big changes.
