The Shield: Bridging the Gap to Recovery

The problem of drug and alcohol misuse and addiction continues to increase in the community. According to Knox County Regional Forensic Center (RFC), overdose deaths in Knox County increased by 29% in 2021. Anderson County fared much worse, with overdose deaths increasing by 67% in 2021. Alcohol is among the top five most frequently abused substances leading to sudden unexpected death or death without medical attendance. The need in Knox County and surrounding areas is evident. The Salvation Army is developing “The Shield,” a 6-9 month residential rehabilitation program for unhoused or uninsured men ages 18 and older struggling with substance abuse. The Salvation Army aims to assist with this issue by providing housing during the treatment process and providing a positive and safe community. Our partners, Renew Clinic and Metropolitan Drug Coalition are working with The Salvation Army to provide the necessary treatment while The Salvation Army will provide a low-stress place to stay, food, community, spiritual support, and assistance/case management with post-treatment.
